Drawing attention concerning Ohammakaya and Most Ven. Dhammajayo

Honorable Sir, I am Bhikkhu Tapassi Dhamma from Nepal. I am chief abbot of Charumati Buddha Vihara, founder-president of Charumati Buddhist Mission Nepal and the President of WBSY-Nepal Chapter. I am writing to you a request as a Buddhist follower to draw your attention towards the news about the controversial criminal suit against the HH Most Venerable Phrathepyanmahamuni {Luang Por Dhammachaiyo] who is a great Buddhist teacher of not only Thailand but of the whole world. It is painful to hear him being treated wrongly and offensively in the name of legal case which we have taken as an attempt to defile our most venerable teacher's good name and reputation. So I strongly condemn Department of Investigation (DSI)'s behavior towards Most Venerable Dhammajayo. Besides, while the case is in the court, some Thai newspapers are publishing one-sided and fabricated news to besmirch not only Dhammakaya but the Buddhism itself which we have taken as an example of Yellow-journalism and we appeal Honorable Prime Minister to intervene such fabricated news from being published.

Honorable Sir, Most Venerable Dhammajayo is a symbol of Theravada Buddhism. He is the supreme teacher of all Theravada Buddhists in the world. His holy teachings of Dhammakaya meditation is practiced around the world by a large Buddhist and non-Buddhist population too. He is 72 years old and is most venerated Guru of Buddhist followers. DSI may have their own logic behind the investigation, but whatever that may be, we would expect them to consider his old age and fragile health besides his honorable reputation among the World Buddhist population. I also came to know that DSI issued an arrest warrant against the chief abbot Most Ven. Dhammajayo for not attending to hear charges while his legal team had requested to perform the hearing at the temple due to his ill health. It makes us feel that DSI has been acting unlawfully just to defile the good name of Dhammakaya and Most Venerable Dhammajayo. It will hurt Buddhist devotees and followers who honor Thailand as a flourished Buddhist land and who idealize Thailand for the honor and support the government had done in the past for the development of Buddhism in Thailand.

Honorable Prime Minister, Wat Phra Dhammakaya is one of the largest Buddhist Temples in Thailand. It stands as a uniting symbol of Buddhists from around the world. Dhammakaya has spread its wings around the world to teach and practice Lord Buddha's most needed moral teachings. Dhammakaya has stood as a strong, self-dependent and a powerful Buddhist organization that is popular for its humanitarian support to needy people from different parts of the world and promoting moral and peaceful living among communities. Dhammakaya is a holy shrine for us Buddhists from outside Thailand too. Dhammakaya has its wings in Nepal too, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. It has a very reputed name among Theravada Buddhist organizations in Nepal. Dhammakaya did a great support to the earthquake victims during Nepal Earthquake in 2015 which has been appreciated with gratitude by Nepalese people as a strong relation between Thailand and Nepal.

Honorable Prime Minister, I and Theravada Buddhists of Nepal who have known Dhammakaya and Most Venerable Dhammajayo strongly believe that Wat Phra Dhammakaya and the Chief Abbot should not be dragged into controversial trials and into such humiliation as it openly demoralizes, humiliates and attacks on the strong foundation of Buddhism and by the same token, on Buddhists in the world.

I humbly and sincerely request you to step forward to intervene and stop unlawful actions towards our honorable Buddhist institution and to protect this institution from being victim of some vicious plotting and injustice. Our hopes and faith towards Thailand’s justice system based upon you and your steps. Dear Sir. Please protect the glorious Buddhist heritage of Thailand, protect the honor of His Holiness Most Venerable LuangPoh Dhammajayo.

I pray for Lord Buddha inspire you to take good steps to provide justice to the most Venerable Dhammajayo and Wat Phra Dhammakaya! May Triple Gem Bless Youl May Thailand be blessed by Lord Buddha! May there be peace and happiness in the world

With Metta

His Excellency General Prayut Chan-O-Cha The Prime Minister of Thailand.

30 May 2016 An Open Letter to:

His Excellency General Prayut Chan-O-Cha The Prime Minister of Thailand.

Most Honorable Sir,

We, the Buddhist expatriates communities in the Middle East views with concern the unjust prosecution and arrest warrant brought against the Abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, Phrathepyanmahamuni (Dhammachaiyo Bhikku) and the threat of using armed forces against a Terravada temple Wat Phra Dhammakaya in Pathum Thani, Thailand.

We wish to state our protest against the criminal charges brought forth by the DSI (Department of special Investigation) accusing the Most Venerable Dhammachiyo Bhikku, of "Receiving of Stolen Property" and "Money Laundering". We found the DSI accusation unjust, bias, full of malice and ill intention. We found it ridiculous to charge a monk for receiving Donations which was later found to be tainted. It was normal for monks to received donations without asking the donors as to the source of the money. As to the charges of Money Laundering, every cheque and cash which was donated by the general public can be accounted for by the temple administration which was used for the construction of various buildings in the temple premises. Currently, Phra Dhammachaiyo at an old age of 72 is seriously ill, suffering from chronic diabetes, very frail, continuous swellings in one leg which is double the size of the other, which made him bedridden and is in a life threatening condition. We deplore the attitude and high handedness of the Department of Special Investigation who keep pressuring Phra Djhammachaiyo to travel to the DSI premises although there are medical evidences certifying Phra Dhammachaiyo's critical ill health.

I have personally known Phra Dhammachaiyo and has been following His Holiness teachings for the past 12 years now, and find His Holiness to be a Role Model as a Buddhist monk, an awesome Master who practices diligently and strictly, never deviate or wavered from the Lord Buddha's Teachings as guided by the Pali Cannon or Tripitaka. Phra Dhammachaiyo is indeed a true Terravada Buddhist monk who excels in the Buddha Dhamma, and His Holiness teachings and his numerous humanitarian and Morality projects has indeed touched and changed the lives of millions of devotees for the better both locally and abroad.

Over the past 40 years, Wat Phra Dhammakaya has cultivated righteous monks to perpetuate Buddhism, instilled morality in people of every age and gender and extended some projects to different countries to help propagate Buddhism there. These undertakings has given people all across the World a chance to learn Buddhism and Meditations and at the same time, learning the true goal of life, that is, to accumulate merits and pursue perfections.

Wat Phra Dhammakaya has continuously involve in in humanitarian efforts both locally and abroad, by giving relief packages and supporting victims of natural disaster like the great flood of Thailand in 2011 and in Nepal, April 2015 where earthquake and landslides left countless people dead or homeless.

Therefore, we wish to appeal to you, Honorable Prime Minister as Head of the Thai Government to use your good office to resolve this issues and predicaments amicably, which is threatening Buddhism and creating a split in the Buddhist faith locally and abroad.

Thanking you in advance.

Letter to Prime Minister of Thailand from the World Theravada Buddhist Sangha Council จดหมายถึงนายก

H.E. General Prayut Chan-O-Cha Prime Minister of Thailand

Excellency,

Wat Phra Dhammakaya, one of the largest Buddhist temples in Thailand, is in an extremely dire situation. The temple’s abbot, Most Venerable Dhammajayo or Phrathepyanmahamuni, is being unjustly persecuted and defamed by Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and Thai news outlets. The background to this is a controversial criminal suit against the abbot in which we strongly believe he is being wrongfully accused.

DSI has performed grossly unlawful acts throughout the case, including issuing an arrest warrant to the abbot for not appearing to hear charges, despite a request by the temple’s legal team for DSI to simply question Ven. Dhammajayo at the temple due to his medical conditions that is confirmed by a panel of doctors. The temple also insisted for DSI to send its own physicians to verify the abbot's health condition. DSI suspiciously refused and instead sought an arrest warrant in gross violation of patient's rights for reasonable accommodation.

DSI has threatened to use armed force of 2,200 personnel to arrest a 72-year-old ailing monk. He has dedicated his life to promote peace and Buddhism. We cannot comprehend how this action can happen in Thailand, where as 95% of population is Buddhist. DSI’s attitude and actions are unjust and excessive. This will demoralize any organization whose work is to promote peace and ethical values in the future.

We request for H E. Gen. Prayuth Chan-O-Cha, the Prime Minister of Thailand, to look into this matter and ensure that peaceful approach will be taken to resolve the issue of DSI against Wat Phra Dhammakaya. We believe that you would understand the sensitivity of this issue and act toward a buddhist monk with compassion.

Yours Truly,
